What is Case Solving?

The concept of Case Solving in the context of consultancy refers to the ability to propose a solution to a more or less complex question. There are several ways how to approach such cases, which are supposed to present complex, unstructured problems with no unique and definite solutions. Cases are real-life or fictitious situations in which you have to reason your solving decisions. In the approach popularized by the Harvard  Business School, small teams of students are given a case with the task to read through and analyze it. Students are also expected to propose solutions to the challenges experienced by the case company, and to present that solution in a structured format.

How are Case Studies used in consulting?

In consulting, every project with a client is a case study. Most projects are even called “cases”. Both case studies and consulting cases have a company with its unique set of issues at the center, with a team trying to analyze these problems, and propose strategic solutions.

When working for a consulting firm however, the client is more engaged: they participate in interviews and meetings. This aspect is modeled in case competitions, where the team has the chance to ask questions to the company’s representatives which sits in the jury.
